East Coast Expedition nautical miles sailed: 193.8

Bug Light Park, South Portland, Maine.

On Saturday, we held our second port stop event in Portland, ME hosted by Epilepsy Foundation New England. Over 50 people with epilepsy and their families enjoyed a sunny day next to the ocean at Bug Light Park. Everyone learned to tie some knots, learned about navigating a boat, and helped make a flag that we’ll fly from the boat on future voyages. We met so many new people and heard about their journey or a family member’s journey with epilepsy. Representatives from our sponsors Neurelis and UCB came to the event and helped us teach some of the nautical activities.

Our final activity encouraged participants to take our One More Step Challenge and become Virtual Shipmates. Sawyer is going to publish a comic book. Jake is going to learn how to sail! Tim is going to hike the Appalachian Trail. Peg is going to continue to let her daughter fly and challenge herself. We’re so proud of everyone that decided to take One More Step towards a fuller life – please let us know how your challenge is going!

In the evening, we were hosted at Throttle Car Club – a great new facility in Scarborough, ME. We had the opportunity to meet more members of the local epilepsy and shared a brief slideshow about our mission and some of the stories of our Virtual Shipmates.

Our next port stop is Saturday, September 4th in Boston. We’ll be teaching our nautical activities during a sunset cruise aboard the Music City Queen and can’t wait to see you there!
