An update from Phil on a small equipment challenge they are dealing with on Fearless that is reducing the efficiency at which they sail. The mast gate, which enables reefing the mainsail from the cockpit, was damaged during a squall yesterday so is weaker than it should be. This causes Fearless to sail with either 2 reefs in the main (significant reduction in sail area) or with a full main. Going between the two options is also more time consuming than under normal circumstances. This is one of the tests of the Bermuda 1-2 that all competitors must face – how to overcome maintenance issues while continuing to safely compete.
