Phil and Coop aboard Cepheus are approximately 145 nautical miles from the finish line in Newport, RI! They are flying the A3 and making between 7 – 8 kts.
Month: June 2021
Why I Love It
This afternoon I was standing in the companionway looking across the Atlantic mesmerized.
Wet & Windy
The start of the race had nice wind, allowing full sails to be used. We timed our runs to the start line and with 1.5 min to go, we turned and raced to the line.
A Sporty Start
Phil Haydon with co-skipper Joe Cooper aboard Cepheus began their 635 nautical mile sail from Bermuda to Newport, RI today, crossing the start line with their class at 11:10am ET.
St. George’s Rotary Club of Bermuda
On June 14th, Phil was invited to be the guest speaker at the St. George’s Rotary Club of Bermuda weekly meeting.
Across the Line
Cepheus crossed the finish line of the single-handed leg of the Bermuda 1-2 on June 10 at 03:19 EDT, after 5 days, 16 hours, and 9 minutes at sea.
Problem Solving: Flossing the Keel
The last day and a half has involved a lot of problem solving. “Why am I so slow?” was the morning question.
Ones and Sevens
These are the times that I check weather files. Part of sailing a boat is to know what to expect in terms of weather. For me, and the other racers, we would like to know wind speed and direction.
Hallucinations
Sailing solo one needs to take short naps instead of long periods of sleep, so that one can check on the boat and have a lookout for other vessels.
Navigating the Gulf Stream
Today I have found my rhythm but most importantly – I keep taking every chance to sleep. Last night had few opportunities for naps.
